In 2015, the Buchwalds moved to Parkland, FL from Weston, CT…one town over from Sandy Hook. All three of the Buchwald children were on campus the day of the Parkland shooting.
In many ways, Adam is a typical teenager. Went to summer camp, loves music, great student, super hard-worker. And it would be easy to imagine that surviving repeated tragedies is what activated him. But that's only part of the story…he was a mensch long before. When he was in 6th grade he decided he wanted to learn to DJ. And besides doing the coolest thing ever (DJ’ing the 6th grade dance so successfully he was then asked to do the 7th and 8th grade dances), Adam decided to take his equipment to a local women and children’s shelter so he could host dance parties for the kids’ birthdays. He couldn’t solve all their problems, but he could make their birthdays magical. Problems + skills + heart = solutions? Lesson learned.
So, in some ways, it makes sense that when faced last Valentine’s Day with a problem so large the whole world can’t seem to solve it, Adam reacted intuitively with “What can I do to help?” It wouldn’t occur to him to respond any other way. DJ’ing taught him how to speak to crowds. Building his business website - www.djbucko.com - taught him about social media. And his experience with school shootings taught him, tragically, what needed to be done. And what he has done is spectacular. As of today, the organization he started with his best friend has successfully gotten over 13,000 families to sign the contract and to post their promise online.
